The Top Diving Destinations In South America

Here are the most popular places to travel for scuba diving:

Galapagos Islands, Ecuador

The Galapagos Islands are a UNESCO World Heritage Site and are home to some of the most unique and diverse marine life in the world. The islands sit at the junction of three ocean currents, the Humboldt Current, Cromwell Current, and Panama Flow.

In addition to incredible marine life, the isolation and environmental factors impacting these islands have resulted in the evolution of unique wildlife – giant tortoises, marine iguanas, and finches, famously studied by Charles Darwin.

While there are dive sites suitable for all levels of divers, the more interesting and spectacular dive sites are suitable only for advanced divers. Strong currents and limited visibility can create strenuous dive conditions.

Fernando de Noronha, Brazil

Fernando de Noronha is a small island off the coast of Brazil. Diving occurs year-round, but for the best conditions, travel here during the dry season, August to December.

The visibility is incredible – sometimes going as far as 50m. Divers enjoy shipwrecks, caves, and amazing rock formations.

It’s possible to take day trips from the mainland but to get the most out of your dive time, choose a liveaboard!

Isla Margarita, Venezuela

Calm, clear waters with stunning coral reefs amaze divers from all over the world. Starfish, Scorpion fish, Moray eels, rays, and hundreds of fish species can be found living in the reefs!

On land, windsurfing, golf, and hikes are great ways to spend time between dives. This island sits just outside of the hurricane belt so travel is convenient year round!
